Empowered and Fit

A Wellness Community for Women

Things that should be easy, are often difficult. This is especially true when it comes to expressing emotions and showing love. I think men have a particularly difficult time with this -- I suspect that it is difficult because we're "trained" in our culture to always be strong, to always put on the brave face, to never show any signs of weakness.

A balanced person (regardless of gender), is not afraid to express feelings and emotions. And small, tiny, seemingly inconsequential acts of kindness go so very far. Here is what I noticed this week, as I tried to show the people in my life that I love them dearly.

- I surprised my wife today with flowers today for Mother's Day. I returned home from my morning training session with them, and placed them on her nightstand. She loves flowers around the house, and when she saw them, her face beemed, she smiled and the entire room was lit up with the glow of her happiness. I need to do this more often

- I talked to my mother on Friday, and told her that I love her. She was so happy to hear my voice, and the act of a simple phone call brightened her day. She's 92, so I can't afford to miss these opportunities. I need to do this every day.

- I opened an instant messaging chat with my dear friend and colleague Alice by saying, "Hello gorgeous!" It wasn't just an empty compliment. The light from her soul and being always radiates so beautifully, and when she beams it truly is a gorgeous vision. I simply wanted to tell her how beautiful she is. Those two words lifted her spirit, ever so slightly, When you help lift another persons spirit, the whole world becomes a brighter place.

- The other day in the store, I saw a woman in one of the aisles trying to reach for a can on the very top shelf. She was short, I am tall. I was in a hurry, but I stopped, took the can off the shelf and handed it to her. When she said 'thank you' I replied, 'it's my pleasure.' Because it truly was my pleasure. I was in a hurry, but I slowed down and reminded myself to live in the moment and not overlook opportunities to show a stranger a simple act of kindness. A simple act, yet it filled my heart with joy and love. Who knew that a can of Green Giant peas could do such a thing!

It's the simple things that make a difference, ever so slightly, in the fabric of our universe. Slowing down, being mindful, adopting an attitude of service and caring for others and showing kindness. Taking time to tell your wife or loved one that she is beautiful. Taking time to say and show people about whom you care that you love them. When you express love with infinite abandon, it is returned to you infinitely. I can feel it now in my heart as I describe these simple, very inconsequential acts. Reliving them has returned that sense of joy and love to me and fills my heart. The heart has an infinite capacity for love, so give it freely and accept it with gratitude and abandon!

Simple things, sometimes very difficult to do. But what a difference they can make.
